Adoption |

Adoption is a new beginning for a child and those who care for that child
An adoption order is perhaps the most drastic order that any family court can
make in relation to a child. The making of the order extinguishes all rights
and responsibilities that the child's natural parents have in relation to it
and places the adoptive parents legally in the shoes of the natural parents.
Because of this and because of the sensitive issues which often arise in relation
to adoption applications for the adoptive parents, the natural parents and the
child, it is imperative that all adoption applications are dealt with sensitively
but efficiently and with a good knowledge of the law.
Sills & Betteridge has an established adoption practice both in relation to step-parent
adoption applications and applications made by adopters who have been approved
by an adoption agency. The Department has a good relationship with the local
authority leading to excellent communication with the Family Placement, and Social
Work Departments who are involved in all adoption applications. The department
also has excellent links with both the County and the Family Proceedings Courts
who are responsible for considering and ultimately making the adoption order.
Whilst the availability of Legal Services Commission funding is limited in relation
to adoption applications, in appropriate cases work can be undertaken in the
initial stages under the provisions of the Legal Help and Help at Court Scheme.
