Corporate Social Responsibility

Sills & Betteridge partners and staff recognise the importance of Corporate Social Responsibility and Charitable Fundraising.

Below are extracts from our policy which outline each aspect of our commitment.

1. Services for All

A large part of our ethos is the principle that all people should have access to legal services. We are committed to continuing to offer legal services to all clients. The firm is one of the few large firms in the region which still offers public funding to eligible clients across a number of services.

2. People

The partners expect and promote respect between all of our people both in their dealings with each other and with clients, suppliers and other third parties. The firm has a separate equal opportunities and diversity policy which outlines our commitment to the way we treat people.

3. Local Community

We define “community” as the local community within which we operate, namely Lincoln, Nottingham, Boston, Sleaford, Gainsborough, Scunthorpe, Doncaster, Grimsby, Northampton, Skegness & Spilsby and their surrounding areas. We commit to contributing positively to the local community by being a responsible neighbour, by building strong relationships with the local community and by being actively involved in local issues.

The firm currently supports the local community in the following ways:-

a) Links with charities and other organisations

Each year the firm’s employees nominate a local charity which will be supported. During the year various activities are organised to help raise funds including dress down days, cake sales, raffles and sponsored running events. Previous nominated charities have been the Lincoln County Hospital Breast Cancer department, Wish upon a Star, Candles, LIVES and Share the Care, Ethan Maul Up Yours to Cancer.

Our current Charity of the Year is Age UK (branches across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire).

b) Sport and Recreation

We regularly sponsor local sports clubs, leagues and organisations. Current sponsorships include:-

  • Lincolnshire Sunday Football League
  • The Lincolnshire Football League
  • Gainsborough Trinity Football Club
  • Boston Rugby Club
  • Lincoln Cricket League
  • Various golf days, swimathons and walks
c) Pro Bono Work

The firm encourages its lawyers to provide free or low-cost legal services to local charities and not for profit organisations.

The firm also gives free initial advice at clinics held both in the office and at other locations across the region. [Link to clinics page….]

d) Business in the Community

The firm is involved in the BITC scheme. We also took part in the Lincolnshire Cooperative’s Partners in Reading project. This involved members of staff visiting primary schools to read with children.

e) Schools

The firm has close links with a number of local schools. As a part of this relationship the firm actively participates in their work experience programmes. We usually take approximately 20 students of varying ages in a twelve month period. We also have several partners and employees who are school governors.

f) Suppliers

We aim to support the local economy by using local suppliers wherever possible.

g) Board Membership/Other Appointments

The firm encourages its employees to contribute to the local community by joining committees, trusts and boards.

4. Environment

The partners recognise the importance of environmental issues both locally, nationally and globally. The firm attempts to reduce its impact on the environment by:-

  • Continually seeking to improve our environmental performance
  • Reducing the volume of waste produced
  • Encouraging recycling throughout the firm
  • Reducing the firm’s energy consumption by encouraging the intelligent use of all electrical equipment
  • Complying with current legislation and best practice
  • Increasing staff awareness of environmental issues

Client Feedback

  • Thank you so much for today. You did an amazing job and I couldn’t have asked for anyone better to represent me! I’m so happy that it went that way and that I’ve been granted the non molestation order. I can now relax a little bit and actually live my life without having the fear of my ex partner in the back of my mind. Thank you so much once again, I’ll always be grateful for you and your team at Sills & Betteridge. You all did an excellent job and handled my situation perfectly.

  • Thank you for the professional way that my divorce was handled; a very painful time which was eased by the ‘fuss-free’ approach from yourself and Leanne. Will certainly recommend.

    Mrs B.
  • I would personally not use any other solicitor – Andrew Durkan has been very professional and understanding in the completion of my will. Highly Recommended.

    Mrs Wilkinson, Lincoln
  • I am very happy. Thank you for all your help. I hope to be alright for the future now. Kind regards

  • I wanted to email to highlight how helpful and efficient Matthew Daurge has been during the purchase and sale of our property. This is this first time Mathew has acted on our behalf and he really has made the process run very smoothly and quickly. Because of this we will definitely be asking him to act on our behalf with our future projects.

Mathew presents as being extremely efficient and his communication skills have been excellent. He has always done what he has said he is going to do without us having to keep following this up. Mathew was always very good at keeping us updated and is very approachable. I have work with many solicitors both on a professional level and personal and I am yet to come across a solicitor that has been as helpful as Mathew.

Mathew is a credit to your company. So I just wanted to highlight his good practice and hope you will pass on this positive feedback as it is much deserved.

  • We remain most grateful for all your help and support in bringing this matter to a satisfactory conclusion. No one could have done more, and we think the outcome is not only a credit to your skills in this area of law, but also to the care and attention that you have taken on our behalf

  • DBS are delighted with the advice given by Euan McLaughlin regarding GDPR. Euan has helped us to make sense of this potential minefield and has put in place robust policies and terms that protect our organisation.

  • Thank you so much again for all your hard work through this, it’s been great to work with you! If ever somebody’s in that situation I know where to send them.

  • Corporate partner Martin Walsh, led a team from Sills, who were an integral part of the team working on our recent multi million pound Management Buy Out of Battles Ltd.

Sills worked tirelessly to complete the transaction against a very tight deadline. Martin used his significant transaction experience and legal knowledge to find practical solutions to the inevitable issues that arose and provided some particularly sage advice when we had our most difficult meetings with the Vendor. Sills service levels were excellent, providing a fast response to communications and immediately turning around the transactional documents. I rate them very highly and would not hesitate in recommending Martin and the Sills corporate team to anyone buying or selling a company or business.

Richard Dewey, Hayward & Bower Ltd
  • As CEO of  Sleaford Quality Foods I was delighted with the work  Sills & Betteridge very recently carried out for the group on the multi million pound acquisition in Sleaford of the land and building formerly occupied (following their closure) by Great Plains UK Ltd which site is directly opposite our current factory and Warehouse. Having been looking for land in Sleaford for some time to meet the demands of our very rapidly growing business,  our turnover is now in excess of £55 million, the location and the 8 acre plus site was perfect for us.

I wanted the transaction completed very quickly so as not to lose the opportunity and to have minimum interference with our production. As suppliers of dried foods and spices to the food industry it was vital we did not let down our customers.

I would in particular like to mention the work which Sills partner Martin Walsh, carried out for us in leading the Sills team. He worked very hard to ensure the transaction was completed to a very tight deadline.

I have worked with Sills for a number of years and continue to be very impressed with them and have no hesitation in recommending Martin and the Sills team.
