A Priory City of Lincoln Academy schoolgirl has recently accepted a place at Lady Margaret Hall, University of Oxford to read Law (Jurisprudence).

Sarah Collins achieved top grades at A Level, A*A*A, and is the first student from the Priory City of Lincoln Academy in a generation to receive an offer of a place from Oxford or Cambridge.

In 2013 Sarah won a place on the highly coveted Career Academy Programme, now called Career Ready - a national programme offering practical learning to help young people develop the skills they need for a career in an areas linked to their academic studies or interests. It is supported by several hundred employers in the private, public and voluntary sectors, from small local businesses to multi nationals.

The Career Academy at City is the only one in Lincolnshire and came to fruition through the collaborative work of the staff and Senior Leadership Team at the academy, a variety of business partners and Karl McCartney MP. Mrs Tracey Taylor Career Academy Co-ordinator played a very important role in establishing the academy and supporting Sarah throughout her two years at the academy.

Sarah was mentored by Rachel MacLean of Sills & Betteridge Solicitors LLP.

Sarah explains “I didn’t ever imagine I would be applying for a place at Oxford until Rachel gave me the confidence to do so. She supported me through my UCAS application process, had regular one to one meetings with me, arranged for me to do work experience at Sills & Betteridge and also helped me to obtain a place on the Law programme at the Oxford UNIQ Summer School last summer. I am so thankful for everything that she has done and am very excited to go to university!’

It was Rachel’s first year as a Mentor.

“Sills & Betteridge LLP take training very seriously, at all levels of entry into the legal profession. We encourage applications from a wide range of individuals - trainee solicitors, trainee legal executives, paralegals and other assistant roles, and give them the highest levels of technical and personal support throughout their training, pre and post qualification.

As the firm’s Training Partner I was delighted to become involved in the Career Academy programme. It was instantly clear to me that Sarah had enormous potential, and I was delighted to be in a position where I could make her aware of opportunities available to a student of her calibre, which were perhaps not already apparent. I wanted to mark her achievement by presenting her with a new bicycle which I am sure will be very useful when she goes to University”.
