Q. How many Training Contracts do you offer?
A. We recruit a minimum of 2 trainees each year.
Q. When is the deadline for applying for a Training Contract?
A. The deadline is 31 January each year.
Q. Where will I be based during my Training Contract?
A. Our trainees are normally based in Lincoln or Nottingham however you may be expected to do a seat in Boston or Sleaford and/or one of our smaller offices.
Q. Do you have a workplace scheme?
A. Yes, we are looking to start workplace schemes during the holiday time with a view to building a rapport with potential trainees.
Q. Can I apply for a Training Contract if I haven’t studied law at University?
A. We welcome applications from students with degrees from all types of disciplines from a variety of Universities. You would need to have completed your GDL or LPC before you started working for us as a Trainee.
Q. How soon do I need to apply for a Training Contract?
A. We normally recruit 2 years in advance so we would expect to receive your Training Contract application before 31 December two years’ prior to the date you are applying to start your Training Contract.
Q. What seats would I be most likely to take during my Training Contract and would I have a choice as to which seats I take?
A. We would discuss with you your preferences and would try to accommodate your wishes as best as we can. The seats most likely to be sat would be Commercial, Commercial Property, Commercial Litigation, Employment, and Residential Conveyancing. There may be an opportunity to sit in Wills, Trusts & Probate, Claims, Family and Crime although the need would greater in the other areas. We would need to determine the business needs at that time.
Q. How long would I stay in each seat?
A. This depends on the needs of the business. You would always spend a minimum of 6 months in each seat but some people stay for one full year in some of the seats.
Q. Will I know all of my seats at the start of my Training Contract?
A. No, we would always inform you of your first seat before your Training Contract starts and then during this seat when you are half way through we would normally tell you what your next seat will be.
Q. Does Sills & Betteridge sponsor GDL/LPC Fees.
A. At this time we do not offer sponsorship for these fees.
Q. Do you offer part-time Training Contracts if I was to undertake the LPC part-time?
A. If you were recruited through the standard recruitment days then we would consider a part-time Training Contract running alongside the LPC.
Q. If I was offered a part-time Training Contract that was running alongside the LPC would there be funding available?
A. Yes, the Firm does offer a salary sacrifice scheme whereby the Firm would pay for the LPC upfront and then deduct an amount from the employee’s gross salary each month to reclaim the fees from the employee. The benefit to the employee is the saving on Tax and NI contributions.
Q. Do you offer Training Contracts to Secretaries/Paralegals who already have a Law Degree?
A. We sometimes offer to Secretaries/Paralegals if they have proved themselves in their role and who we think would be an asset to the Firm as a Solicitor.
Q. Do you offer time-to-count for Paralegals who have been working in a Paralegal role in this Firm, or another?
A. It would always be decided on an individual basis and whether we felt confident that you would have enough experience and knowledge to have time-to-count granted. We have in the past offered time-to-count to our Trainees up to a maximum of 6 months.
Q. Is there a possibility if I have completed my LPC and have not secured a Training Contract until the following year of becoming a Paralegal in the Firm?
A. Again, this would be in consideration of the business needs at that time. If there was a position then this would certainly be an option.
Q. Do you fund the Professional Skills Courses?
A. Yes, we fund the Professional Skills Courses.
Q. Am I guaranteed a job at the end of my Training Contract?
A. We would always endeavour to retain trainees once they have qualified. However at that time the business need and performance would be considered and a decision made on this basis. We cannot guarantee that you will be kept on after your Training Contract.
Q. How far into my Training Contract would I know if I was being kept on?
A. We would always communicate with you and at the latest you would be told 2 months before your Training Contract was due to come to an end.
Q. Does the Firm consider the CILEx route to qualification for those people who have obtained their LPC who are unable to secure a Training Contract?
A. Yes, the Firm does have people employed under this scheme.
Q. What are the benefits to me and/or the Firm to qualifying via the CILEx route?
A. The benefit to qualifying down the CILEx route is that you are able to remain in the same department throughout the length of your Training Contract and not move seats.
Thank you so much for today. You did an amazing job and I couldn’t have asked for anyone better to represent me! I’m so happy that it went that way and that I’ve been granted the non molestation order. I can now relax a little bit and actually live my life without having the fear of my ex partner in the back of my mind. Thank you so much once again, I’ll always be grateful for you and your team at Sills & Betteridge. You all did an excellent job and handled my situation perfectly.
Thank you for the professional way that my divorce was handled; a very painful time which was eased by the ‘fuss-free’ approach from yourself and Leanne. Will certainly recommend.
I would personally not use any other solicitor – Andrew Durkan has been very professional and understanding in the completion of my will. Highly Recommended.
I am very happy. Thank you for all your help. I hope to be alright for the future now. Kind regards
I wanted to email to highlight how helpful and efficient Matthew Daurge has been during the purchase and sale of our property. This is this first time Mathew has acted on our behalf and he really has made the process run very smoothly and quickly. Because of this we will definitely be asking him to act on our behalf with our future projects.
Mathew presents as being extremely efficient and his communication skills have been excellent. He has always done what he has said he is going to do without us having to keep following this up. Mathew was always very good at keeping us updated and is very approachable. I have work with many solicitors both on a professional level and personal and I am yet to come across a solicitor that has been as helpful as Mathew.
Mathew is a credit to your company. So I just wanted to highlight his good practice and hope you will pass on this positive feedback as it is much deserved.
We remain most grateful for all your help and support in bringing this matter to a satisfactory conclusion. No one could have done more, and we think the outcome is not only a credit to your skills in this area of law, but also to the care and attention that you have taken on our behalf
