Can I really be charged after so many years?
Yes, the law allows prosecutions no matter how much time has passed. But that doesn’t mean conviction is inevitable. Every case must still be proved beyond reasonable doubt, and time can create serious difficulties for the prosecution as well as for the defence.
What if it’s just one person’s word against mine?
Many historic cases come down to one person’s account. That can feel frightening, but it doesn’t mean the case is hopeless. We can carefully test the reliability of the allegations and highlight gaps or inconsistencies.
Do old laws still apply?
Yes. If the events are said to have happened years ago, the case is judged under the law in place at that time. This is one of the reasons it’s so important to have a solicitor who understands how the law has changed.
Why did they wait so long to report it?
There are many reasons people may delay in reporting, but these long can create difficulties for the prosecution. We can raise these issues and explain how they affect the fairness of your case.
What should I do if the police want to speak to me?
