Seeking Legal Advice Following Domestic Abuse | What to Expect and How We Can Help

Taking the first step to seek legal advice following domestic abuse can feel overwhelming. Many survivors are unsure where to turn, what support is available to them, or how they will manage the cost of legal proceedings. At Sills & Betteridge, we understand how difficult that initial contact can be and aim to make the process as straightforward, supportive and informative as possible.

Once an enquiry is made, a member of our specialist Family Law team will contact you for an initial conversation. We provide a safe and confidential environment where you can discuss your circumstances. We understand that every situation is different, and many survivors find it difficult to speak about their experiences. Our priority is to listen carefully, understand your individual circumstances and identify whether any urgent action is needed to protect you and/or your children.

Following this initial discussion, we will advise you on the legal options available. Depending on your circumstances, this may include applying for a Non-Molestation Order to protect you from further abuse, harassment, threats or intimidation, and/or an Occupation Order to determine who can remain living in the family home. Where children are involved, we can also provide advice regarding child arrangements and any safeguarding concerns.

A common concern for many clients is the potential cost of legal proceedings. However, survivors of domestic abuse may be eligible for Legal Aid funding. As part of our initial advice, we will explore this option with you, assess your eligibility and explain the evidence and information required to make an application.

We also recognise that legal advice is often only one part of the support required. If you are not already receiving assistance from a domestic abuse charity or support organisation, we can provide information about local and national services that may be able to help. This may include signposting or referrals to domestic abuse charities, Independent Domestic Violence Advisers (IDVAs), counselling services, refuge accommodation and other specialist support networks.

Seeking legal advice can be daunting, but you do not have to face the process alone. From your first enquiry through to obtaining protection from the Court, our aim is to provide clear legal advice, practical support and access to the wider resources needed to help you and your family move forward safely and confidently.

Our team can be contacted confidentially on 0800 542 4245 or info@sillslegal.co.uk or via this contact form. Please don't hesitate to contact us.
