Misdiagnosis and Delays in Diagnosis

What is Misdiagnosis?

Misdiagnosis is a type of medical negligence which can have life changing consequences. There are two main types of misdiagnosis, Incorrect or missed diagnosis and Late diagnosis.

  • Incorrect or missed diagnosis is when a GP or consultant diagnoses the wrong medical condition or fails to diagnose any problem at all. If you have been diagnosed with the wrong medical condition this can lead to unnecessary or even dangerous treatments which can, in turn, often lead to the actual condition getting worse. In the worst cases, it can be too late once the correct diagnosis is found.
  • Late diagnosis is when a medical professional fails to diagnose and treat a serious medical condition in a timely manner which can cause delays in treatment. Failure to provide the necessary treatment or refer the patient to a specialist, can result in many conditions becoming more serious.

When negligence can occur

A misdiagnosis can be made by any medical professional who’s responsible for a diagnosis whether NHS or private. This could be due to a failure to examine you properly, accurately interpret test results, or refer a patient to the correct specialist. When a diagnosis error leads to the wrong treatment, delayed treatment, or even no treatment at all, many conditions can be made much worse.
